A song that represents a feeling of love

This week in class we were asked to create a song based on emotion and share that song to the class and the creative process we used to create the song.

This song to me represents the feeling of love, and the emotional roller coaster that love for me has been. Some say love is the endless emotions of warmth, happiness, sadness, loneliness and togetherness all wrapped up into the feeling of what some may say is like a warm blanket.

What is the definition of love?

Love to me is a strong feeling of affection, a great interest and pleasure in something or the feeling of deep affection or sexual love for (someone).

Love can also be a curse in your life or an obsession or addiction to someone or something.

The Greeks had the good sense to break love into four levels: "storage" was kinship, "philia" was friendship, "eros," sexual and romantic love, and finally divine love was known as "agape."They might interpret the sentence, "I love you but I'm not 'in love' with you" to mean, "I feel philia toward you but not eros."

Love makes people do stupid things, dangerous things as well as magnanimous and bold things.

Witch leads me to now letting you lovely readers know how i created the track and were i drew the emotion of love for this song from. Even though this love comes from a place of love it also represents the heart break of love and breaking up with someone or leaving a loved one behind because your choices can lead you to places were you wish to free yourself from the heart ache that can be associated with love and heart break, for me this is what the track represents and the emotional feeling of love i had whilst creating the track.

But what is love really? Because people define love differently, a common trap is for couples is to assume they are speaking about the same thing. And because people define love differently, they show it differently and have different expectations of what it should look and feel like many, if not most, of the problems couples or individuals can experience is a result of a miscommunicated love or a dashed expectation around love and connection.

Many of us show love in the ways we hope to receive love.

(the golden rule of doing unto others as you would have others do unto you)

but this assumes your partner defines love the same way you.

I have found the best way to express any emotion including love truely can be done through ambient electronic music and sound.

So here is a bit about my track called love and how it was created through time, good management and collaborating with artist that help to bring my vision of love alive through ambient based electronic dance music.

The vocals in the track were written and sung bye an artist bye the name of Samual Mettigez (An Australian hip hop artist from Melbourne Australia known as musicbyNB.) With myself doing the vocal looping and back up vocals to create the harmonic ambiences of bringing two completely different vocal artist together to create the artist peace that consist of smoothness and balancing harmonics that only Samual could help me to bring to the table creating a pure feeling of love.

The track was developed in the studio right here on the sunshine coast and after hours and hours of hard work and deliberation we came up with an original version and also a remastered remixed version just to change it up a bit. (Both tracks will be officially released on all platforms on August 3rd 2018.

For the track itself i used various sample recordings i recorded with a zoom recorder from home and whilst i was out and about (Frankly i love recoding everything i do so i can see what ideas i can come up with in the experimental design of each track that i create.)

Real life instrumentation and experimental synths that i'm still learning about and mastering within my craft day to day through school, networking and good management of my music and my dream to be perfectly balanced and created something i think is amazing and being able to share that with the world.

Between recording, mixing and mastering i love making music in such a way that seems to flow through real life emotions within my mind, my body and my soul, i still believe to this day that i make my music simply based on my mood that i feel at the time when i sit in my studio and my creative thought processes start to flow through me.

Sounds included in the track are things such as:

SYNTHS: Banging of a metal stair rail with a spoon, Salt and peppers shakers, the opening and closing of a car door and a bedroom door for my bass lines and drum kit(please note that a real life drum kit was also included int the track), the sound of ambience are the waves rolling in at beach for some harmonics that have been included in the track and lastly the vocals and vocal looping in the track created bye myself and Samuel.

Arpeggiators: Arpeggiators are perhaps one of the simplest and most audibly recognisable sequencing tools available. In essence an arpeggiator is a very basic real-time sequencer designed to take a chord as an input and turn it into an arpeggio.

Arpeggiators for myself are on of the funniest most dopest plugins any one can use to enhance the clarity of the sound and also the receptive nature and the ability to re-loop and repeat any sound in any form over and over again as many times as you like, i believe can help to make any sound really pop and help to speed up or down the tempo of any one given wave form that has been made for the sound with in sampling.

Real life instrumentation and vocal recordings:

The instrumentation included in the track for the harmonics and tempo are from a

Bass guitar ( The bass guitar used was a Squier Jaguar Bass V Special) .

The grand piano ( Steinway & Sons).

The Acoustic guitar (Gibson).

Microphones used (Rode NTK and the SureSM7B)

The drum kit (Pearl drums maharanee kit)

Synthesisers (Roland JD-800 ,Yamaha CS-80 and the ARP 2600) All supplied in house bye Jam Pot studios in located on the sunshine coast at Noosa.

(JAMPOT STUDIOS NOOSA ARE LOCATED AT 144 Eumundi Noosa Rd, Noosaville QLD 4566 TEL:07 5455 5555)

Recordings for the samples that i used in the track were done with a zoom recorder/ and various microphones and mastered and produced in house/Jampot studio's on my Mac-book with Logic Pro X.

IN-CONCLUSION:

I’ve been thinking a lot to the purpose of music lately. I started reflecting on what music means to me and its role it plays in my life. This role has changed in different moments in my life, and ultimately music has been the one thing that has been there for me in life regardless through thick and thin, but it’s also a good reminder and learning curve to ask how other people relate to music.

I decided to ask a few class mates in class about there thoughts on this track and there thoughts on music in class to see what their responses I asked my students the question

What did you think of the track?

The responses to me were very mature and observant answers.

I think music can be so hard to describe and define, but it’s easy to describe how it affects us.

Here’s a list of their responses.

“Music is one of, if not the most important aspect of my life.”

“Music is how I relate myself to the world.”

“Music means the world to me. It makes me think about how it relates to life and I love the beats.”

“Music is a way to express yourself, keep you company while you’re alone, and always give you something to do.”

“Music is everything, without music there is no purpose to a lot of stuff.”

“Music is a way to express yourself and your feelings. It’s something that I can go to whenever I need it.”“Music is a way to express feelings that might be hard to express otherwise.”

“Music to me is a source of stress relief. It helps me calm down or just to relax, on a bad day. But on a good day, music just helps me get through the day.”

What are you thoughts on music?

“Music is a way of expressing me and being able to relate to other people.”

“It can personify emotions in life if written well.”

“Music is a source of inspiration and expression.”

“Music wakes me up, gets me going, and is a way to add some more awesomeness to every day.”

“Music means a lot to me. It is a way to express and release emotions. I love music that on top of the fun beats, it can carry a message that is relative to real life situations.”

“Music is a nice thing you can listen to when you want to get out and just go into your own world.”

“Music is my way to escape from the real world and just listen and let myself go.”

“Music is freedom. It’s everything. Music connects the world!”

“It is the expression of deep emotions and feelings.”

“Music calms me down, lifts me up and always makes me feel a certain way.”

“Explains things when words fail; Music speaks.”

“Music means something that’s inspiring and can match your moods”

“Music helps me connect to life.”

Again these responses are very insightful to me. It really shows the importance music plays in their life. For some people music is the most important thing in their life. For others it’s one of the ways they express their emotions.

While looking at this list I thought it would be interesting to simplify this list as to what I infer the students were trying to say in its simplest form.

In conclusion /Here’s what I came up with:

Music is ones identity

Music is ones world

Music is a drug

Music is a therapist

Music is how one shows the world what I’m feeling

Music is how one socially interact with humans

Music is entertainment

Music is inspirational

Music is a friend

Music is life

Some of these responses to me aren’t healthy but in my mind they seem to be normal and I categorise them as being healthy although sometimes, some would like to say as you pursue your dreams and are lead down a creative artist path and journey that only you yourself can decide upon as to were the journey may lead you.

Making music in your world sometimes can be seen as not being a good thing, as others can be known to not believe in your ability to try and create something different and can be known to try and hold you back or make you believe that your journey can be fake or not achieved by sabotaging what you can do bye dragging you down or saying that your dreams are unachievable and not possible based on their poor beliefs.

I’m not questioning the moral and values about one places on music, but on the importance music plays on society and the individuals including myself, I would never question the importance that music has played in my own life and the light that music has given me through out the dark times in my life.

As I look at my list I can easily share example after example of how this has been true in my life during different stages. It reminds me as I teach how important music is to our culture through the sounds i produce and release with the label i'm contracted to . It makes it exciting to be a musician, while at the same time it gives me a responsibility to show the benefits of music to life's of others that I wish to inspire through my sound that I create.
